Mastercraft had one of the biggest boat booths at Surf Expo showing the industry that they are still one of the top manufacturers. They were segregated with wake on one side of the aisle and waterskiing on the other showing further separation between the two sports than years past. There wasn’t much new at expo as far as models, but aesthetically the boats were even more dressed up than last. Director of Marketing John Behling sat down in front of this years cool graphics on the X Star to give us a small scoop on whats new for 2008.

Same ole’ booth, tons of new product. Despite impressing patrons with a flashy new booth Hyperlite decided to stick with the same booth from last year and relied on impressing them with three new board series and completely redesigned bindings for the 2007 surf expo.

Surf Expo wasn’t the only thing going on this past weekend. WakeBoarding Magazine’s 4th annual Wake Awards took place this past Friday immediately following the first day of Surf Expo at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.
The event started off with some industry recognition awards like Manufacturer of the Year and Retailer of the Year before moving on to the main 13 awards known as The Wake Awards.
Rusty Malinoski and Brian Grubb took the top spots as Best Wakeboarder and Best Wakeskater. Move of the Year was no big surprise with Chad Sharpe taking it with his sick Double Indy Toeside Back Roll. Best Women’s Rider put Amber Wing on top once again, adding another accolade to add to her impressive resume.

The WakeWorld Rider’s Choice awards have grown each year in prestige. Now in it’s seventh year, the Rider’s Choice awards have definitely found it’s place among the top achievements in wake.
While the top spots in Top Woman Wakeboarder and Top Wakeskater remain practically unchanged from the previous year (with Dallas Friday and Brian Grubb on top), some of the other awards saw quite a few changes. Rusty Malinoski jumped 4 spots to become the Top Male Wakeboarder. This achievement also granted him the award for Most Improved Wakeboarder. Also, in their rookie year, Ronix has made a huge impact by knocking Liquid Force off of the top spot of both Wakeboard of the Year and Binding of the Year.
