Oklahoma City, Okla. — Fans packed the shorelines of the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City today to witness the final rounds of the 2008 Rockstar Energy Drink WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra.
As expected, the defending world champ Phillip Soven, 19, of Longwood, Fla. reached the Pro Men’s division finals today and as the top-seeded rider. But the pressure of retaining his title got the best of Soven, as the Florida native posted a score of 82.00, landing him in third-place.
Taking the top spot in the six-man final and claiming the 2008 world title was Rusty Malinoski, 24, of Humboldt, Sask., who became the first Canadian rider to win the world title since Jeremy Kovak claimed it in 1997. Fellow Canadian rider Aaron Rathy of Nanaimo, B.C. finished the contest in second-place.

Kenosha, Wis. – Today marked the fifth and final day of the 2008 Air Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink, where seven national titles were claimed.
In the Pro Men’s Division, five riders battled it out on the water for the national title. Last year’s winner Rusty Malinoski looked to have a repeat performance in the finals, but Phillip Soven threw down a near perfect run, posting 98 points to take the top spot in the finals and ride away with his first-ever national title. Malinoski finished in second-place followed by Andrew Adkison in third.

Conspiracy? Nope, not when Phillip Soven and Dallas Friday ride for you. While Soven’s victory might not be that exciting (the dude is now filling up closet #3 with 1st place trophies), Dallas’ victory is. It is safe to say that the pro women’s landscape has changed quite a bit since she exited the sport to recover from a near fatal injury. It is great to see her on top, and I hope the new crop of girls can push each other and the female perspective of wakeboarding that much further.

The WakeWorld Rider’s Choice awards have grown each year in prestige. Now in it’s seventh year, the Rider’s Choice awards have definitely found it’s place among the top achievements in wake.
While the top spots in Top Woman Wakeboarder and Top Wakeskater remain practically unchanged from the previous year (with Dallas Friday and Brian Grubb on top), some of the other awards saw quite a few changes. Rusty Malinoski jumped 4 spots to become the Top Male Wakeboarder. This achievement also granted him the award for Most Improved Wakeboarder. Also, in their rookie year, Ronix has made a huge impact by knocking Liquid Force off of the top spot of both Wakeboard of the Year and Binding of the Year.

Voting for WakeWorld’s Rider’s Choice Awards has begun. Voting will last throughout the month of August. Anybody can vote, which also enters you to win all sorts of stuff from CWB Wakeboards, Proline, Ten-80, and Sidewayz.
Last year, after a five year run Parks Bonifay finally lost his spot as top male wakeboarder by Danny Harf. Amber Wing made her debut on the list of top female wakeboarders at #4, but could be moving on up after gaining fame as the first female to do a 720. Dallas Friday has dominated the female wakeboarders with the top spot since 2001 (the year of the inaugural Riders Choice Awards). Liquid Force cleaned up by taking best wakeboard, bindings, wakesurf board, vest and handle/rope last year and will be looking to pull a repeat this year.
