HOW TO: Preparing for wakeboard competitions

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

DailyWake LogoThe wakeboard season is approaching, and along with it comes a handful of competitions.  Along with the Pro events that take place all around the world, there is almost certainly an amateur competition in your area (your “area” might be across the street or across a few states, depending on how large your local wakeboard populace is).  As many of you know, our sister site LearnWake.com gives our members all sorts of wakeboarding instructional videos, tips, etc.  They even have a bulletin board there where professional coaches will answer your questions.  One question that seems to be popping up on LearnWake is “How to prepare for a wakeboard competition.”  I figured I’d roll this answer into a DailyWake post, so everyone can get a little insight on these strategies.

Watson Dethrones Parks in Carnival

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Just last weekend, Parks Bonifay again competed at The Projects on a recently-repaired knee to try to defend his belt a second time. The all-rail competition known as The Carnival, hosted by Pat Panakos brought out all the top rail riders in wakeboarding.

This year’s Carnival had many new rails in addition to all the obstacles from last year. Riders had a wide variety of lines to choose while riding, making the contest even better for the spectators. Shawn Watson used all of the rails to put together some solid runs in each round, making it to the championship bout against defending champion Parks Bonifay. Each rider rode well in the final, and Watson ended up coming out on top showing some great style and control on the rails.

Watson joins Parks Bonifay and Scott Byerly as only the third person to win the championship belt of The Carnival.

INT League US Championships right around the corner

Friday, October 5th, 2007

INT League

One of the worlds largest grassroots watersports leagues is having their national championships next week in Louisiana. The INT is a league for wakeboarding, waterskiing, kneeboarding and wakeskating and has been around since 1993. They hold regional events, so if your looking to get involved in the competition scene for yourself, your children or friends this is the place to start. They are known as the little league of watersports but have divisions available for all ages and skill levels.

The national championships is a season ending competition that joins all the qualifying competitors from the different regions together to battle it out for national titles in their respective principles and divisions. This years 10th annual event will have close to 500 competitors for both ski and wake combined to make this the largest competition held each year in the world for watersports. Competition starts on October 10 and finishes on the 13th with an awards banquet and dinner that evening. The event will be held closer to the east coast this year at Bennett’s Ski School in Zachary, LA.

Bonifay and Murray come up big at Parks’ Double Or Nothing comp.

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Parks Bonifay’s “Double Or Nothing” competition, arguably the biggest double-up competition of the year, has brought out the best in wakeboarding’s elite once again. The DON comp showcases the most technical tricks and biggest airs in the wake industry. This year’s event proved no different with 20 of the top riders going for it all with 1080, backside 900 and double back roll to blind attempts.

When the waters calmed down and the boats were back on shore, it turned out that Shane Bonifay came out on top for the Best Trick award with his Toeside Backside 720 [video of Shane previously doing this trick after the break]. Shaun Murray did edge out Shane though with the Biggest Air award. Shaun’s Air Raley was up in the air for 53.5 video frames, which is roughly 2 seconds of air time.
