2007 – The year of the Soven massacre

Well, it’s been in the books for a while now, but Phillip Soven has officially been crowned WWA World Series Champion. Soven completed the task when he won Boardstock XII, being the first to ever sweep the whole series with 5 wins out of 5 events. I can’t recall such domination since someone went after Nancy Kerrigan’s knee over a decade ago [editor's note: distasteful---I know].

  1. I don’t remember where I saw it, but there was a video of him being interviewed at one of the events and he said he hasn’t missed a crow 5 in over 2 years.

    That’s crazy.

  2. An alternate title for this story was going to be “Frogman leaps over competition.”

  3. It will be interesting to see if he’s able to carry this momentum through the off season. They are a lot of REALLY good young riders, but as long as he can stay healthy, I would expect he’ll be out in front for a little while.

  4. It just seems like the top riders get streaky. I remember when Parks seemed like he was on a completely different level from everyone else. Then Danny had his period snatching up X Games Gold medals. Then Rusty started having his moments, and now you’ve got Froggy once again in the mix too.

  5. That’s true. I would have thought injury would be the most common streak ender, but looking back on things, most riders are healthy when they’re on their game, and then after relinquishing the top spot to someone else that’s when they get hurt (if they do).
